  • Psophocarpus tetragonolobus Open pollinated  Heirloom. 75 days
  • 6' to 10' tall. Day neutral selection. All parts of this high protein tropical plant are edible, beans, foliage, blue flowers and tuberous root.
  • Pick tender, tasty four-sided pods when 1”-2” to sauté.
  • Once plants are well established harvest leaves like spinach. After frost the root can be roasted.
  • Now that a day neutral variety was discovered in China we can recommend this rare bean for northern gardeners. It still needs warmth but will set pods far earlier than what is commonly available.
  • Grow a few and learn why it’s often called a supermarket on a vine.
  • Plant late spring or early summer.
Planting Directions:  Direct sow in spring after frost danger has passed and soil temperature is a minimum of 60˚, 70˚ is optimum. Plant 1”to 2” deep, 3-4” apart.  Cultivate soil incorporating compost or a low nitrogen general purpose fertilizer.  Keep soil moist until seed germinates, after that water regularly until harvest at which time water deep and more often. We recommend using a legume inoculant when planting.
